Abstract
Based on a corpus of articles published in Le Monde and analysed using the lexicometric tool Gallicagram, this study examines the acceptance of the French term jeune pousse, which was created by metaphorization as a substitute for the loanword startup. This tool enables users to visualize the evolution of word usage over time, detect their number of occurrences in the corpus and explore their contextual meanings. Since the research was hampered by polysemic variation resulting from the method of creating the term jeune pousse (by means of metaphorization), the context played a particularly important role, both in identifying the French equivalent for startup and other metaphorical meanings of jeune pousse. For this reason, each newly identified meaning, not initially anticipated by the author, is supported by an appropriate exemplification. Francophone language users’ preferences in relation to the loanword startup and its French equivalent jeune pousse are illustrated and evaluated using graphs created with the Gallicagram tool.
