Abstract
The narrator and values in Michel Houellebecq’s novelistic discourse. The article examines the relations between selected functions of narrators established by Gérard Genette within the category of the narrative voice and the axiologic system conveyed by the texts in the selected novels by Michel Houellebecq (*1956) Extension du domaine de la lutte (1994, translated as Whatever by Paul Hammond in 1998), Les Particules élémentaires (1998, translated as Atomised by Frank Wynne in 2000), Plateforme (2001, translated as Platform by Frank Wynne in 2002), La possibilité d’une île (2005, translated as The Possibility of an Island by Gavin Bowd in 2005), La carte et le territoire (2010, translated as The Map and the Territory by Gavin Bowd in 2011), Soumission (2015, translated as Submission by Lorin Stein in 2016), Sérotonine (2019, translated as Serotonin by Shaun Whiteside in 2019) and Anéantir (2022, English translation titled Annihilation to be released 19/09/2024). Drawing on the narrative theories of Gérard Genette, Vincent Jouve, Susan Suleiman, Algirdas-Julien Greimas and Herbert Paul Grice, the study explores how Houellebecqian prose maintains a critical dialogue with its narrators with the help of authorial distance, and an empathizing author emerges in his work. It also examines how Houellebecq’s position can be compared to those of Zygmunt Bauman, Václav Bělohradský and Václav Havel. Finally, it examines how the author transcribes a specifically Houellebecquian concept of antihero as a means of adequately reflecting the contemporary human condition, of rediscovering the sense of life of the contemporary man and his bearings in the world.
